Surrealism
Surrealism aimed to revolutionise human experience, rejecting a rational vision of life in favour of one that asserted the value of the unconscious and dreams. The movement’s poets and artists found magic and strange beauty in the unexpected and the uncanny, the disregarded and the unconventional.
Rene Magritte
FORM
This painting by Magritte is painted using either oil paint or acrylic paint and the main colours that I can see are blue, green, white and black. In the top two thirds of the painting he has used nearly all blue and in the bottom third green. The colour composition creates the rule of thirds and he has brought out the horizon by making the green darker which gives it a depth of field and stops it from looking flat. The white he has used on the edge of the newspaper forms a contrast against the blue so that we can see what it is. The black of the suit and hat also creats a contrast and makes the man look quite serious.
Because this is a print it is hard for me to see any marks on the surface but in my opinion I think it might be smooth but may have some texture on the trees.
CONTEXT
Magritte did many of his surrealist paintings in the 1930s and was interested in work being published about how the mind works and how to analyse dreams. His art work shows this interest with his paintings almost looking like dreams. At the time of painting the world was at war so perhaps his paintings were a escape from what was going on around him. In my opinion I know there was also the wall street crash, so maybe this picture shows us a financial person in his business suit looking at his stocks and shares but he is unaware of the financial reality. The surliest painting movement went on to influence photographers which is why I am interested in the research of this artist.
MOOD
The mood that it creates is very hollow because of the see through image of the news paper

Evaluation
For this project I started by looking at surrealism and the weird and wonderful but decided to focus on the theme of shrouded figures and the unnatural as I thought this would give me the outcomes I was looking for. During this project the part I enjoyed the most was finding a out door location and using props and models to develop my ideas. I also enjoyed developing my skills with the manual settings on the camera whilst on location.
One area I feel I have developed a bit more is the way I use Photoshop, learning how to add layers and changing opacity to get the effect I wanted.
In some of my images I wanted to show a figure levitating and so I learnt how to use the clone tool to merge and manipulate the back ground and to remove objects. Next time I use Photoshop I might try the dodge and burn tool to refine my ideas further.
The artiest I looked at made me think about my theme of the weird and wonderful as a starting point but I went on my own journey which I am proud of. In my opinion the most successful part of my project was my final outcomes because the journey from the raw image to the final photo shopped image really shows how I use the tools effectively. The main problem I encountered in the project was working till the deadline but what I've learnt from this is to use my time more efficiently.
On the whole I am really pleased with this project and feel I have developed my skills
