Statement of Intent
I aim to produce a portfolio of work demonstrating my ideas, development, creative work and reflection based around the theme of landscape. At the end of this project I will choose my best photographs and put them in a gallery so they are easy to see.
For my initial research I will start by looking into different landscape photographers to see the contrast in the theme. The first photographers I am looking at is Adam Burton, because he took amazing photos of Angelsey which is also a location where I will be going. I'm looking at his work to gain inspiration before I take my photos, he seems to take images that show a deep depth of field which is important in landscape photography. I'm also going to look at the work of Peter Watson because he captures beautiful pictures showing a array of different colours bringing out the contrast off all these colours.
When I was given the theme of landscapes my initial thoughts were that I needed to get to specific locations rather then taking images of just my surroundings, because this would limit my work. I really like the idea of landscape, because I can contrast the urban more exciting city landscape and the high buildings and nice views with the more subtle beautiful seascapes.
To show progression through my work I will start by taking photos in Anglesey and try to capture the beauty of the seascape. I would then like to go to different locations such as Manchester and London to capture and contrast the different landscapes and see which one I prefer and will give me the direction that I need to go in. I would like to experiment with a wide range of techniques within my work. I will be using a DSLR on manual and use different settings and experimenting with new techniques. I feel like this will improve my photography skills as I will have more knowledge about the camera and I will be comfortable with switching settings. I will also try to push myself to be more creative within Photoshop to make a better or more creative image.

Ideas & Themes
Adam Burton
This is my favourite piece of photography from Adam Burton because it has a almost non real fictional theme to it. I like how the shine of the sun is going through parts of the clouds looking like it is breaching through and how the lake far in the distance glows and makes the image brighter. The sharp looking rocks are positioned in uniform and organised faction and I think the colours make the image look calm and relaxing. The curves of the hill make it look like the waves of the sea are on land which is also very relaxing. The shot looks like it is taken from birds eye view at the edge of the mountain, this is good because that means that he can get more detail in the picture. The green and blue colours contrast and stand out on opposite sides of the image, and there is also a deep blue colour that stands out in the middle of the photo. The photographer has used a wide lens to capture a lot of detail into the photo, he has probably used a tripod to avoid movement from the camera and to make a steady shot therefore might of used a slower shutter speed to capture all the colours and shine of the sun through the clouds.
Anglesey
SUNSETS
BestIn this picture I captured the beautiful smooth ripples of the sea and the last glimpse of the sun before it sets into the horizon. I also capture the movement off the clouds as they freeze in motion. I achieved this because I managed to get the correct aperture.
|
WorstAlthough it has a good composition the photo is slightly out of focus, and this is because I took the picture as we was moving in the car. I tried to capture the eerie vibe of the house and capture the beautiful sunset light in the back.

LIGHTHOUSE
Best |
Worst |
In my opinion I think this is my best picture because I really like the birds eye view that has allowed me to capture the whole of the lighthouse. I have also used the rule of thirds which makes it a strong composition.
|
This is my worse picture because the image is over exposed and the composition is very weak.
|
CLOSE UPS
THE SEA
I think this is my best picture because I have managed to capture the sun breaching through the clouds which make my image look very dramatic. I also like the composition because I had two third sky and one third sea which makes the sky stand out.
|
I think this is my worse picture because the composition is not that interesting and the lighting is a little flat.
|
THE SUN
SKY
Best |
Worse |
I'm pleased with this photo because I like the contrast of the bright blue against the white clouds. I also like the way I have captured trees in the bottom half of the picture which makes the image more interesting.
|
I think this is my worse photo because I did not get the correct exposure and so it is too bleached out.
|
BUILDINGS
CRASHING WAVES
TREES
BestI think this is my best picture because I've managed to capture foreground, middle ground and a distance. The trees in the front create a fantastic contrast against the pale sky and also the mountain ridge.
|
WorseIn my opinion I think this picture is not as interesting and I don't really like the main colour of brown which makes the picture dull.

This is one of my best images because of the senary

This is one of my best images because of the depth of field and the lens glare.

Urban Landscape
I'm going to compare my Angleasy photographs with the photos that I will be taking in London. In Angleasy, I captured images of lighthouses sunsets , beaches. The lighting was bright, soft light because of the sun. However on a different day it was very dim and gloomy this was due to it being February/winter time. When I was taking photos it helped me to develop my camera skills because I had the setting on manual and I had to keep checking that the exposure was correct as the sun went in and out of the clouds. The settings I used a lot was the aperture, shutter speed and the white balance. I really enjoyed taking images of the sea with the sun reflecting in it at different times of the day, I particularly like the images I captured of the sun sets.
When I go to London I will hopefully be able to capture bright light from from the sun because I will be going to London in the summer of July. I will capture urban images mostly of buildings showing different architecture. I will be able to compare these different landscapes and make progress with my project by developing my images further. I will also have the opportunity to take images at different hights and view points which will be a contrast to my Angleasy photos.

London
Context
This image is taken by Tim Peake who is a European space agency astronaut. Born in Chichester, England, on 7 April 1972, Tim is married with two sons. He finished his 186 day Principia mission working on the international space station for expedition 46/47 when he landed back on earth 18 June 2016. Tim has a background as a test pilot and a British army a corps officer.
The photograph is called "London from space" and like in the name of the photograph it is a picture of London from space, which shows the beautiful city of London at night with the glistening of the lights from the city bellow.
The picture was taken recently in 2016 which gives us a modern view of the city.

Composition
In the image we see a birds eye view of the city of London taken from space. Running through the middle of the picture the zig zag River Thames which is a very popular river in London. The river is a important part of the composition as it creates a contrast with the surrounding area by its shape and its colour. It is a strong leading line in the image along with other streets and roads that create a patch work effect.
Because the image is taken from space there is a big sense of scale which makes the picture more interesting and beautiful. I can see orange/yellow lights gleaming form around the center of the picture, but as the light gets closer towards the middle, there is a very bright glow of light. In the bottom right of the picture you can see thin lines/stripes of light going across the bottom right section.
In my opinion, because this image has been taken from space the lens would have to be a special lens built specifically for that to pick up detail from such a far distance.

Comment
In my opinion I like this image because it was taken at night and so you can see the city lights glowing and I think the dark spaces could be parks or even stadiums. The image is very unique because it was taken from space which u cant do often because of the access so there for its quite special and different from a eye level view. Obviously it is quite hard to link this back to my own work because i cant access this type of equipment but I do like the colours it brings out from the city.

Manchester
I decided to go to another location at a different time of the year to extend my landscape project. I went in late November so I could also capture the Christmas lights and reflections

Final Portfolio of Work
For this project I was given the theme landscape. When I thought of the word landscape I pictured open fields and trees. When researching landscape photographers I came across Adam Burton to me his work represented what I visualized landscape to be like.
During the project we went to Anglsey here I was able to take photographs using the inspiration from Adam. However I felt that the images I took would not represent a good final outcome as they looked good as the original photograph.
I was then given the chance to visit London to take photographs of Urban Landscapes I decide that I wanted to use the images from London to create my final outcomes. As they represented a different image that I visually started with.
I then developed my original pictures in Photoshop using the cloning tool and paint buck it. During the project one technique I felt that I used well was drawing around the images with the magnetic lasso tool. I had to use this tool to make the colour be placed where I needed them to go.
I feel that I have created a strong reflection of Landscape using technique that I have developed through out the project.
Next time I create a project I will explore more skill full techniques on Photoshop.
