Statement of intent
I aim to produce a portfolio of work demonstrating my ideas, development, creative work and reflection based around the theme of conflict. At the end of my project I will choose my best photographs and create a poster out of them.
For my initial research I will start by looking into gang violence/street riots, which is the area I am interested in, because there has been a rapid increase of knife crime and crime in general in the UK.
The photographer I have chosen to look at is one who worked for UNICEF previously it showed a impact of violence on a family which I think would relate to gang violence as often you don't see the impact on the family but the victim.
I am interested in the theme of violence and the impact it has on a victims which is a area I hope to explore in my work.
When I first chose this theme, I wanted to know more about the history behind it, for example, how and why gangs are formed and it impacts the society through riots. The images I wanted to capture a deeper meaning behind the image.
To develop my work I will take a sets of photos in different locations and them refine them further using Photoshop. I hope to learn how to apply text, lighting effect plus filter to create effect posters.
I have 8 weeks to complete this mini project, working towards creating professional posters around the theme of gang violence.

Content
In the image I see a refugee family struggling. The photo shows a family walking through a muddy field with a old house in the background, which makes me think that they're having to leave there home behind. When I first seen the image I thought the man was carrying a normal bag, but after researching the picture I was informed that its a baby in a carry cot.
To me the image is recent, because the clothes they are wearing and the image is in colour.
The image has been taking in Europe.
The image shows a building, people and a muddy field and also trees.
The effect of the image is given from the facial expressions of the people which shows they are struggling.

Composition
There is a diagonal subject line going from the right bottom corner to the top left corner which makes you focus on the peoples faces because their faces fall on this line. this composition Technic really brings out their expression of their suffering and emotional scars.
The photographer has used a deep depth of field which has been used to make the whole picture look in focus and we can see clearly all of the detail which bring out the suffering even more.
The people are in the foreground of the image making them closer to help us feel a connection. The photographer has used the rule of third where the sky is 1/3 and the muddy ground is 2/3 making us focus on the terrible conditions.
I think the brown dirty mud helps express how their journey has been, and also the mud shows lots of foot prints which makes me think a lot of people have walked through it, their journey ahead is going to be tough.
The photographer had zero preparation at he has captured the moment which gives the picture a big impact and a more natural feeling.

Comment
In my opinion I think this is a very strong image because it show emotional facial expression and has a good composition. It also demonstrates a real family good through a real event ,they are not actors, to me this gives the image a very strong meaning. This image hardly needs an intoduction because you can clearly see or assume what they are.
Connection
The theme is about the impact of conflict on the lives of everyday people, and this is clearly seen in this image that is focused on a fleeing family. Although I wont be going to a war zone, I can still use some of the techniques that I can see in this picture such as grouping people together in a triangle and having their eyes cast down.
In my opinion there is a strong message behind this image, rather than showing dead people, we are focused on the suffering of a young family with a new born baby which has had a strong emotional impact on me.
Because the image is in colour you can clearly see the detail the photographer has captured.

My theme will be Gang Violence
Images to inspire my outcomes
All of these posters are based on putting a end to gang violence
Gang violence is happening all over the world at all times. Criminal street gangs have become one of the most serious crime problems in the UK in the recent years. Gang-related organised crime in the United Kingdom is concentrated around the cities of London, Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham and regionally in the south coast and northern England. With regards to street gangs the cities identified as having the most serious gang problems, which also accounted for 65% of firearm homicides in England and Wales, were London, Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool.
Shoot 1 (Gang Violence)
In these images you can see a drug/money trade happening. In the first image you can see the man is the white hood (drug dealer Muzy) making an exchange with the man in the dark grey hood. The man in the dark grey hood (going by the name officer Awais) was supposed to hand over a bag full of money to the drug dealer Muzy, but instead hands over a empty bag and Muzy gives him a bag of drugs. Muzy opens the bag to find it empty. So he attacks the under cover police officer (Witch muzy didnt know at the time). The man in the mask (Winston) was with Muzy in case anything happens.
Best from shoot 1This is my best picture because, it looks like the action that has been happening is all frozen in the moment. Everyone is showing motion and movment almost in a picture.
|
Worst from shoot 1This is my worst picture because, it looks fake. What i mean by that is it looks forced and everyone looks directed. Everyone looks lazy and not into it.

Shoot 2 (Gang Violence)
In shoot 2 you can see a series of images, that took places in a police station in south of Greater Manchester. In the first two images you can see that Winston was arrested (witch you will see in shoot 3) and interrogated. He was found guilty in court. He pled guilty to two charges, one being " In possession of a offensive weapon", and the other "Intent supply of class A drugs". In the next three images u can see his mugshot.
What My Aim Is?
My aim is to produce a website demonstrating my ideas my initial theme is based around gang violence and drugs. At the end of my project I will produce a gallery of best final design exam prep time I will choose my best photographs and mount them so they
EVALUATION
My project theme for conflict was Gang Violence, which I really enjoyed putting together as I believe that it should have more light shed on it, as it is a very important and serious subject.
I found developing the storyboard sequence the most interesting because, I enjoyed putting together a story from pictures together, and I also enjoy using my creativity and putting it to use.
The new techniques I have experienced during this project was how to start using Photoshop to refine my images. I learnt how to add text, crop, change contrast and lighting and how to save my images as a JPEG.
I want to develop on my next project the ability to use Photoshop properly and make better outcomes using more of the tools and filter available.
For this project I researched the UNICEF photographer to inspire my own outcomes by looking at the composition, camera angle and cropping, which I have tried to do in my own work. Because I use this technique my photos have a deeper meaning behind them and I am proud of the way they came out. I was also inspired by the posters which helped my layout and text.
I think my most successful part was the police investigation. This is because if you really understand the picture, then you will feel in the moment, like as if you're one of the criminals. My problem was not getting the right setting and background for the picture.
Next time I will go outside of school to find a better setting and location which will improve the look of my images and give them a more professional feel and will be more suitable for the project.
