Depth of field refers to the amount of the image that is in a good level of focus, and is linked to the aperture setting. It allows the you to ‘manipulate’ the frame so that the object can become more or less apparent than they would appear in front of you. For example, a wide aperture will provide a shallow depth of field meaning a very small area of the image will appear in focus. A medium depth of field means half of the picture is in focus and the other half is out of focus, a large depth of field is were everything is in focus.
